Are Reservations Recommended?

چکیده
Revised July, 2008 We examine the role of reservations in capacity-constrained services with a focus on restaurants. Although customers value reservations, restaurants typically neither charge for them nor impose penalties for failing to honor them. However, reservations impose costs on firms offering them. We highlight ways in which reservations can increase a firm’s sales by altering customer behavior. First, when demand is uncertain, reservations induce more customers to patronize the restaurant on slow nights. The firm must then trade off higher sales in a soft market with sales lost to no shows on busy nights. Competition makes reservations more attractive as long as enough customers will consider dining at either restaurant. When there are many firms in the market, it is rarely an equilibrium for none to offer reservations. Second, we show that reservations can increase sales by shifting demand from a popular peak period to a less desirable off-peak time. This is accomplished by informing diners when all peak reservations have been given out. In this setting, competition may make offering reservations less attractive, and a market with many firms may have no one offering reservations.

RFC 3175 defines aggregate Resource ReSerVation Protocol (RSVP) reservations allowing resources to be reserved in a Diffserv network for a given Per Hop Behavior (PHB), or given set of PHBs, from a given source to a given destination. RFC 3175 also defines how endto-end RSVP reservations can be aggregated onto such aggregate reservations when transiting through a Diffserv cloud. There are situa...

متن کاملConstant-Time Dynamic ATM Bandwidth Scheduling for Guaranteed and Best Effort Services with Overbooking
In this paper, we present an analysis of an existing ratebased ABR scheduling algorithm described in [1], and propose an enhanced rate-based round robin (RBR) scheduling algorithm for ATM switches and end systems. One of the novel aspects of RBR is that the scheduler supports available bit rate (ABR) traffic as well as guaranteed bandwidth reservations. In addition, bandwidth overbooking is all...
متن کاملCost estimation of advance reservations over queued jobs: a quantitative study
A grid is a geographically distributed resource sharing environment across multiple organizations. The most typical grid resources are clusters with the high performance/cost ratio. In general, these clusters are shared as non-dedicated grid resources since local users may run their jobs simultaneously. Local jobs are usually queued and processed in a batch mode with uncertain waiting time whil...
متن کاملNetworks with Advance Reservations: The Routing Perspective
This paper provides an initial look at how support for advance reservations affects the complexity of the path selection process in networks. Advance reservations are likely to become increasingly important as networks and distributed applications become functionally richer, and there have been a number of previous works and investigations that explored various related aspects. However, the imp...
